Dr. Nimit Oza

Family and educational background

Nimit Oza, a writer, Columnist, and urologist from Gujarat, India, was born on October 3, 1981. His great grandfather and grandfather were teachers. His father and mother both were working with Bank of Baroda. His mother is a voracious reader.

In 1999, he completed his schooling from “Dakshinamurti Vinay Mandir” in Bhavnagar. His dream was to be a doctor. So, He studied hard and achieved his goal of becoming a surgeon.

No one in his family had a medical background. He was the first one to pursue the medical education. 

He earned his MBBS and MS degrees with a gold medal from the Government Medical CollegeBhavnagar and his DNB Urology from ACE Hospital, Pune (previously known as Institute of Urology).

His career and establishment

Nimit started his academic career as an assistant professor in department of Surgery at Bhavnagar. It was a government job with handsome salary and security. But, he resigned from it to pursue his higher studies. He appeared in DNB CET SS that is common entrance test for DNB super specialty and acquired 2nd rank in Mumbai Centre.

He got admission in Super speciality branch Urology in Pune. He completed his Urology training in 2012 and Joined as a full time consultant urologist at Sterling Hospitals, Bhavnagar. He started his private hospital in year 2014.

Nimit as a writer

During his tough times at Pune, He started writing in 2011. He says that writing is a therapy for him. He started by writing essays. His first write up was on his grandfather. Later on, he started writing about his life experiences and unique takeaways from them.

He discovered that writing is a wonderful way of catharsis. Writing was the only activity that survived him during his tough times.

He began writing in 2011 and did not take it seriously until 2017. In 2017, he self-published his first book ‘maati no manas’, which was the compilation of his all write ups during last 6 years. That was a path breaking and significant event in his life, as that was the mark of his rebirth. Birth into the field of literature.  He discovered his writing abilities and the impact he had on many lives. The ability to transform lives through his pen inspired him to continue writing.

Nimit’s love for Gujarati language and his future as a writer

Shri Vikram Bhatt, Nimit’s Gujarati teacher from school, was a huge supporter.

Since childhood, he had found his Gujarati dialect appealing.  Nimit’s teacher read some of his articles when he first started writing and thought they were very good and unique. He advised Nimit to keep writing. Nimit’s teacher assisted him greatly in compiling his first book in Gujarati. Within six months of publishing his first book, he wrote two more books in Gujarati. He has written 16 books till dateHe began writing columns in 2018. He used to write two columns a week in Divya-Bhaskar, one on Sunday and one on Wednesday. Currently, He is writing weekly column ‘The Literature Lounge’ every Sunday for Gujarati Mid-day.  His long-term goal is to write more fiction. He would also like to be a part of film script and screenplays.

Nimit’s supports in the field of literature

During his first book launch, Kavi (Poet) Shri  Vinod Joshi and Shri Kajal Oza Vaidya supported him much, which inspired him greatly.

Nimit’s recognition in the field of literature

Nimit’s noted works include Chromosome XY (2019) and Pappa ni Girlfriend (2020). He received the Darshak Award for Chromosome XY in 2020. Oza’s first novel, Chromosome XY, was released in 2019. It is a work of medical science fiction that tells a story about male pregnancy. Maati no Manas (2017) is a collection of his literary essays and short stories. His collections of articles on diverse subjects are Ajvala no Autograph (2020) and Shwas ni Serendipity (2020). In Gujarati daily Divya Bhaskar, he publishes weekly pieces Ajvala no Autograph and Man no Monologue. For his book Mari Vahali Pariksha (2017), he received the GLF Award (2017-18).

He enjoys reading English literature and has learned a lot from many writers and literary figures.

Nimit’s message to other people

He believes that one should first prioritize financial security before pursuing a hobby. Don’t give up your work to pursue your passion. Once you are confident that your passion can generate enough amount of revenue, then you may quit your job. He says Do not quit your day job to follow your passion. It is very important to finish your formal education, accept solid job offers in your field, get employment, and achieve financial stability first. Then you are free to pursue whatever you want.
